Fun and folly – Jürgen Mayer H completes a giant timber visitor attraction in Spain
In a neat piece of political theatre, Seville’s Metropol Parasol finally opened after a long and painful gestation on the same day as its champion, three-term mayor Alfredo Sanchez Monteseirín, retired from office. But as he left the stage, pride must have been tinged with relief; right until the last, it was not clear that the building could be built, or that the expensive and incongruous project would be be well received by the people of the city.
